Number of SKUs
Active Countries
Together, Cascade & OrtoPed offer more than 200,000 SKUs stocked across four warehouses, plus another 50,000 SKUs that can be drop-shipped directly from suppliers, for a total of 250,000 SKUs in their active catalog. Since 2015, Cascade & OrtoPed had been operating under two completely separate product data models: two PIM systems and two website frameworks. Every aspect of master data management was a 2.5x duplication problem: every product had to be entered into two systems, and because of the French-language requirement in Canada, all product data had to be entered bilingually.
Before the eCommerce replatforming could start, the companies needed a single, unified source of truth for product and master data that could meet the requirements of both businesses. The product data team wanted one unified product record, one place to manage data, and one source of truth for key translations.
Cascade & OrtoPed needed the new system to fully synchronize both existing websites, with room for others in the future, so the solution had to be unified, modular and scalable. From a product-type perspective, Pimcore needed to manage several product types, including simple products, products with variants, product bundles, and bundled variants, with all configuration options stored in up to six languages (US English, Canadian English, French, Spanish, German and Italian) and strong validation in place.
Key issues:
"The TORQ team provided implementation patterns and best practices, supported scoping, and led knowledge transfer, both technical and functional, to ensure that the solution would cater to Cascade's diverse product taxonomy, focus on end-user usability, and be secure, robust, auditable, fast, and intuitive to use. Pimcore handled all our product types and provided an elegant solution for articulating product attributes, such as colour, size and width, across multiple languages. TORQ's pattern of using Classification Stores and leveraging Pimcore's translation functionality for attribute-keyword pairs allowed the team to manage a single source of truth for key translations: we maintain one keyword for the colour ‘Orange’ and translate it to all required languages a single time. When rapid ERP and eCommerce integration became critical to the launch schedule, the TORQ and Cascade teams quickly delivered a high-performance solution by leveraging Pimcore's message-queue architecture, ensuring reliable, scalable and auditable data synchronization across systems."
Don Anderson, Senior Data Architect at Cascade
"TORQ helped us deliver a Pimcore solution that enables Cascade & OrtoPed to centrally manage 250,000 SKUs across four North American warehouses. We re-platformed to a single Shopware instance, using two sales channels. Pimcore is fast and has centralized all of Cascade's product data, assets, translations, and product attribute classification management into one system. We're thrilled by Pimcore's ability to automate data validation, data quality, data clean-up, and integrations out of the box."
Don Anderson, Senior Data Architect at Cascade
Cascade decided to partner with TORQ to implement a PIM and MDM solution on Pimcore that would unify all product data under a single solution. The PIM solution became the single source of truth for integrating product data across all sales channels. OrtoPed's website had also reached end-of-life status and needed to be re-platformed, so TORQ additionally partnered with Cascade & OrtoPed to build a unifying eCommerce platform on top of the same Pimcore foundation. This approach met several goals defined by Cascade's team: a flexible data model that could meet the needs of both companies; the ability to store all related master data; the flexibility to manage channel- or integration-specific data; and multi-channel syndication, including to the ERP and to current and future eCommerce sites.
To accomplish this, TORQ set up regular review sessions on code, architecture, integration and data with the Cascade team, providing guidance, patterns, code review and customizations focused on best practices, capacity development and knowledge transfer.
Solution highlights:
Implementing Pimcore was the first step in cutting the overall complexity of the Cascade-OrtoPed data model in half. The team was able to reassign 33% of its resources, one full-time employee, from data management into a role focused on generating marketing revenue through supplier outreach programs.
Combined with consolidating two active eCommerce platforms into a single Shopware instance offering two distinct sales channels, Cascade reduced its Operational Cost Per Order (OCPO) from 26 cents to 11 cents, a 60% reduction in this important KPI.
