The challenge for the project was to replace the previously used classic 1-product checkout and to develop an online shop for electricity and gas products with an overarching shopping cart that offers EWE customers convenience and transparency through its modern architecture. Tariff changes with automated product suggestions, cross-product shopping carts with a memory function, real-time validation in every ordering step and a high-performance system architecture - all of this should be possible with the new energy ordering route. Cross-product offers, and cross-selling should complement the EWE offer and give customers additional services.

Solution

Flexible online shop with Pimcore e-commerce framework

The Junge Haie developed a flexible online shop for new and existing customers from B2C and B2B for electricity and gas products. The implementation was based on the Pimcore e-commerce framework, a cloud infrastructure and a flexible microservice architecture. Thanks to the comprehensive shopping cart, the customer receives cross-product offers and can check out several items in one step. The completely digital order entry ensures automatically validated orders, which enter the background systems of EWE Vertrieb GmbH without system interruptions. Existing customers can also use their customer login to transfer their master data from existing contracts to new orders or to change products. For this purpose, the existing customer is shown suitable switching tariffs. Furthermore business customers can add products with different delivery addresses and customer details to their shopping cart and book them in just one order process.

A shopping cart that combines various energy products

Unlike the usual order lines for energy services, the Pimcore-based online shop offers a shopping cart system that enables cross-product shopping. This way, several electricity and gas products can be booked in one order process. Customer data from a product already in the shopping cart can easily be transferred for further orders. This saves time, minimizes sources of error and simplifies the ordering process. Moreover, the Junge Haie GmbH is proud to continue supporting EWE VERTRIEB GmbH in the area of a business online shop for telecommunications products as well as in the development of the new business website business.ewe.de.
