GTIN / Barcode

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the international standardized product identification number, in most cases printed as a barcode (EAN-13 in Europe, UPC in the US) on the packaging. It is the basis for POS systems, logistics, marketplaces, and data pools. Pimcore PIM manages GTINs centrally, validates uniqueness, and exports them consistently to every sales channel.

The GTIN identifies a product uniquely worldwide. The same yogurt cup has the same GTIN in every country, every manufacturer gets its GTIN number range from GS1, the international standards body. Packaging units (single pack, carton, pallet) get their own GTINs.

In retail, the GTIN is the central reference. POS systems scan the barcode and find the price. Marketplaces like Amazon and Otto require the GTIN for every product entry. Logistics systems use it for inventory and goods receipt. Data pools like GDSN build their entire data architecture on the GTIN.

Pimcore PIM manages GTINs as a required attribute at the product and variant level. Validation rules check for uniqueness and check digit correctness, workflows prevent duplicate assignment. On export to marketplace feeds, GDSN data pools, or ERP interfaces, GTINs are published in the format each target requires.
