Product Taxonomy

Product Taxonomy (classification) is the structured arrangement of products into categories and hierarchies. A good taxonomy makes products navigable, comparable, and findable in search. International standards like eCl@ss, ETIM, or UNSPSC provide templates. Pimcore PIM supports parallel taxonomies for different channels and audiences, without categorizing products multiple times.

A taxonomy is more than a hierarchical tree. It is the foundation for navigation, filtering, search, recommendations, and marketplace listings. A poor taxonomy leads to products that no one finds because they sit in the wrong category, or to redundant categories that create confusion.

The challenge is that different channels and audiences need different taxonomies. A B2B buyer thinks in eCl@ss or ETIM classes, a B2C buyer in Home > Kitchen > Pans, Amazon has its own browse tree structure. A single product has to be correctly placed in multiple taxonomies at the same time.

Pimcore PIM supports parallel taxonomies as a structural feature. A product can be placed in any number of category trees, every taxonomy is independently maintainable, changes propagate without duplicate effort. Classification systems like eCl@ss and ETIM are natively supported, including attribute mapping and validation.
