Rolls Royce Power Systems

Rolls-Royce offers world-class propulsion and power solutions as well as service solutions across the entire lifecycle under its mtu product and solution brand. Through digitalisation and electrification, the company is developing cleaner and smarter propulsion and power solutions.

The company supplies and services comprehensive, high-performance and reliable systems based on both gas and diesel engines and electrified hybrid systems. These clean and technologically advanced solutions serve the company's marine and infrastructure customers worldwide. Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division is headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

The Power Systems division of the British technology group Rolls-Royce is one of the world's leading suppliers of innovative drive, energy and service solutions. As a Pimcore partner, we advised the Friedrichshafen-based company, in cooperation with another agency, on the introduction of a PIM system and created a proof of concept. As part of the proof of concept, a data model was to be developed and the import of large amounts of data from an ERP system into Pimcore PIM was to be tested. It was also very important for the company to learn more about the possibilities for creating print documents.

Challenge

Creating a complex data model

For the completeness of the data model, it was of great importance to gain a detailed understanding of the mtu products and to understand which components of the machines should be recorded in which form in the data management and how they relate to each other. Only with this insight can a data model be created that truly fully represents the business process and the products.

Data import into Pimcore – Proof of Concept

In an initial workshop, the requirements for the data model were recorded. Subsequently, in close consultation with the Power Systems business unit, a sophisticated data model was developed that optimally mapped the desired business process. After the implementation of the data model including all object classes and structures for assets in Pimcore, the data import from the ERP system was set up. With the help of the Data Hub, a prototype import job was created. With this, any amount of data could now be imported from the ERP system into Pimcore, so that the completeness of the data model could be finally checked. The imported data could now be channelled through the respective workflows. The display was adapted with custom views and custom layouts for different user groups. In addition, an export of the data via GraphQL interface was set up and various options for generating print documents were examined and evaluated.
