Tierra Biosciences provides researchers rapid access to a high diversity of custom proteins through a proprietary machine-learning artificial intelligence and automation protein synthesis platform.

As Tierra Biosciences prepared to fully enter the commercial market, it required a complex e-commerce portal to support its potentially infinite catalog. HDMZ used Pimcore to develop an e-commerce front-end and customer portal, which would allow users to (1) build orders of custom-designed protein sequences; (2) complete the transaction for the order; and (3) track its progress through the production process.

Facilitating a catalog with infinite possibilities

Tierra tasked HDMZ with developing the Tierra Protein Portal, a first-of-its-kind e-commerce portal for ordering custom proteins, which would allow Tierra to commence full business operations. To make it possible for customers to order custom proteins, the portal could not be designed to draw from a set portfolio of pre-specified products. Instead, Tierra customers required a portal in which they could create their own unique products, essentially calling for a dynamically changing “catalog” with the possibility of infinite products with complex composition. Additionally, the check-out process required real-time validation – in which the platform screens for, and reports, potential manufacturing risks.
Solution

Employing flexible data object management for dynamic order building

HDMZ created a custom product configuration and ordering platform as sophisticated as the proteins that Tierra Bio manufactures. E-commerce support was essential to this project, making Pimcore the ideal solution due to its extensive e-commerce module, excellent CMS, and data-centric order model. Because the potential “catalog” of products was unknown and infinite, HDMZ supported the open-ended and dynamic nature of the order-building process by utilizing the flexible data object management of the order model. HDMZ also built the “shopping cart” to be a fully realized application, which — in addition to supporting the transaction — interacts in real-time with the Tierra system for validation, analysis and pricing.
Results

A unique, fully functional e-commerce portal

The fully functional e-commerce website now facilitates the entire ordering and production process from start to finish. The Tierra Protein Portal also closed the loop between the company’s e-commerce transaction providers, its financial accounting and its production systems, so that the entire process could be conducted online. This enabled Tierra’s protein manufacturing capabilities to scale up and competitively enter the market of protein manufacturing.
