Challenge

Organize the connection between local producers and food & beverage professionals

In Ireland, in the tourist region of Kerry, tourism professionals had been struggling for several years to offer their customers quality regional products. They were spending too much time sourcing producers, purchasing and invoicing, not to mention the resource-intensive photo shoots and marketing materials to promote these products. At the same time, local farmers and artisans did not have sufficient resources to develop the marketing of their products, especially online. To address these issues, The Kerry Food Hub decided to bring the region's producers together in a physical market. More than a million people visit the region each year and spend about €100 million on food and drink out of the more than €400 million spent locally.

"This type of B2B e-commerce platform is bound to inspire other initiatives and new generations of producers. We can duplicate the model in neighboring counties, or even develop a new marketplace, for example towards supermarkets."

Solution

Artisan Market: an innovative ecommerce platform

The Artisan Market is a self-service platform for Artisan Food Producers (sellers) to trade with retail, food service, and hospitality professionals (buyers). The Kerry Food Hub called on the expertise of Galilée's teams to develop this procurement platform, according to very demanding specifications. Standardization of product data was a major challenge in this project: given the scope of the products sold, the variety of possible variations (salads, cakes, meats or cheeses) and the multiplicity of participants, Galilée's e-commerce experts deployed an MDM to manage the entire product catalog (PIM) and associated media (DAM). Powered by Pimcore, this repository guarantees the scalability of the architecture, providing great flexibility in the management of product references and all the collateral documentation essential to buyers: photos, descriptions, videos, health documents.

"The Kerry Food Hub marketplace is part of a strong economic dynamic: studies indicate that B2B marketplaces will represent 30% of all global B2B online sales by 2024! The first customers are the sellers. It is the supply of data that makes the marketplace rich. In-depth work on the repository is essential upstream."

Results

A huge save of time for the buyers and a new sales channel for sellers

Restaurant professionals can then easily buy from several producers, without multiplying orders and invoices, and by grouping their deliveries according to their schedules and the points of sale to be supplied. Buyers save a lot of time as they can easily manage supply lists, track the delivery of their orders and centralize their invoices, without unnecessary duplication. Hotels and restaurants also save time in preparing their communication materials. Each producer adds to its references all the marketing and documentary materials that its professional customers may need (flyers, menus, etc.). Restaurant owners can print ready-made content or insert the desired images or product information into their own communication materials.
