Advantages of Open Source Software

Whenever new software is introduced, one is faced with a fundamental question: Open Source or commercial software? The decision for the appropriate software usually has long-term implications and should therefore be considered carefully. 60% of organizations have increased their usage of Open Source in the last year and usage continues to rise at a furious pace. Even if many organizations are not aware, Open Source software is already present in 90% of organizations. We show why making a decision for Open Source software such as Pimcore is a good choice in many cases.

Strategic Reasons for Open Source

Open Source builds on the success of others. Companies, individuals and the community. This makes it so powerful. All innovation in the recent years in areas such as cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence have happened in Open Source ecosystems. It has become the primary engine of innovation all around the world. This makes it the key building block of all modern enterprise software architectures. And that's why in 2009 we decided to also distribute Pimcore as an Open Source Software. Organizations use it to build ambitious digital projects because:

  • It raises their efficiency: Open Source software reduces development cost and lowers time-to-market for implementation and maintenance
  • Unmatched interoperability: With open APIs, it can integrate with any of your future systems as new APIs are released and need to be connected
  • Continuous innovation: It meets any unique need of your digitalization strategy - or if a new feature does not exist yet, you can easily just build it yourself

So what makes Open Source better?

Flexibility and adaptability
Commercial software are proprietary developments; the source code is only accessible to the vendor. Expensive consultant teams are necessary for integration and extensions. With Open Source software, the source code of the software is publicly accessible. This allows a high degree of flexibility for individual adaptations.
Independence from vendor
The use of commercial software binds companies to the manufacturer in the long term. Vendor lock-in makes changing to alternative offers more difficult due to high exchange costs. With Open Source all integration, adaptation and further development can be carried out by internal teams or freely selected IT service providers.
Software quality and security
Enterprise Open Source software provides solutions that offer a variety of benefits: high-quality source code, stability, performance, and a high level of security. Global communities ensure ongoing development and promote a high level of innovation. Security gaps are quickly discovered and closed.
Uniform standards for interoperability
Stable and tested technologies based on open standards provide high performance and compatibility with other software solutions and IT systems. In addition, Open Source projects often have a much shorter time-to-market than commercial software solutions.
No recurring costs or license fees
Open Source products typically feature lower license fees or no license fees at all such as Pimcore. You can do the development in-house or by freely selected IT service providers. Therefore, Open Source often provides the lowest TCO (total cost of ownership).
Continuous technology innovation
Because Open Source software usually contains out of hundreds or even thousands of other Open Source products, each fulfilling a vital role, it solves critical business problems faster. 90% of organizations say it improves their speed of innovation.

Cost of Open Source

The use of the open source software Pimcore, in contrast to the use of commercial software, incurs no license cost. As with any enterprise product, the one-time set-up of the solution requires effort in the areas of consulting and implementation. Once the solution is in place, commercial software will incur recurring "hard costs" - royalties, service level agreement, updates and maintenance fees. These costs are usually lower if you use open source software. Because you are not tied to a particular provider. Using open source software gives you access to a global, huge market of trained implementation service partners.

Revolutionary licensing model

Economic benefits, endless innovations, a newfound freedom, and hundreds more advantages! The flexibility of a framework, that you are able to fully control and modify to your exact needs. Not a SaaS platform with just a thin layer of configurability, but rather a full grown stack for digital transformation. Fully compatible with AI/ML tools from Google, Facebook and Amazon. We give enterprise companies full ownership of their innovations - without vendor lock-in and with best TCO. In most cases free and open-source software is much more cost effective than proprietary solutions.

The Rise Of Open Source Software

CNBC recently released a great short documentary about the open source movement. Open-source software powers nearly all the world’s major companies. This software is freely available, and is developed collaboratively, maintained by a broad network that includes everyone from unpaid volunteers to employees at competing tech companies. Here’s how giving away software for free has proven to be a viable business model.
