Case Study: Create packaging and labels directly from Pimcore

MK Illumination, founded in 1996, is one of the global market leaders for festive lighting solutions with a large portfolio of products such as fairy lights in all variations.

We implemented an automation solution for MK Illumination that enables the company to produce all types of packaging automatically. To do this, we integrated our in-house development PimPrint into the customer's existing Pimcore system. Now, different packaging die-cuts can be assigned to a product as data objects and finished packaging can be created directly from Pimcore using the current data.

Lots of packaging, lots of data, lots of errors

MK Illumination's product portfolio comprises over 450 items. Each item requires packaging or blister cards plus stickers and transport labels in different formats, with specific technical data and corresponding legal test marks, energy labels, etc. This resulted in a significant production effort. At the same time, testing was very laborious and prone to mistakes, as it was easy to overlook a mark. The main challenge was to reduce the effort involved in creating and checking packaging artwork, labels, and stickers, simplify quality control, and speed up the production process overall.

Solution

Automation with the help of PimPrint and InDesign templates

First, we created InDesign templates for all the required packaging die-cuts – whether it be folding cartons, header cards, or carton cards – and uploaded them to Pimcore as assets. The InDesign files were prepared in such a way that they can be used for every variant and product option. Next, we implemented our proprietary PimPrint plug-in. This plug-in creates a seamless connection between Pimcore and InDesign, completely without middleware. The blanks can now be assigned to a specific product as data objects by relation and enriched with the corresponding product data. A die-cut is created and stored on the server for single product stickers, corner stickers, shipping marks, rating labels, and inner carton labels. This allows any type of label or sticker to be generated directly for each product.

Results

The right packaging for every product – with one click

Thanks to our automation solution, MK Illumination is able to generate all packaging materials from Pimcore at the touch of a button. Always with the latest data. This also applies to all other output channels, as product maintenance is carried out centrally in Pimcore. Whether website, catalogue, data sheet or even packaging and transport labels – the output is consistent everywhere. The production effort for new packaging is also greatly reduced. All that is needed is to assign a die-cut to the new product and the new packaging can be generated from Pimcore. Stickers and labels do not even need to be assigned separately; they can be output directly after the product is created. There is also the option of generating transport labels individually or all at once for an entire order available in the ERP. MK Illumination therefore has much less work creating and checking the packaging materials and a faster time-to-market.
