It all starts with the data architecture
SOMMER Group's vision included objectives for different "construction sites": from more efficient production of print materials such as catalogs and data sheets, to uniform management of brand websites under one roof, to an online product configurator that helps customers make purchasing decisions. It was clear to us that the prerequisite for achieving all the different goals is an intelligent data architecture and data management. Once this is placed on a solid foundation, the individual improvements can then be triggered and implemented like dominoes.
New data architecture with single source of truth for all brands
So the first step was to develop a data model based on Pimcore that allows SOMMER to manage the data of all brands at a single source of truth. In order for it to be accepted by the employees, we made sure that the maintenance tree reflected the internal thought structure of the company. In the next step, we built a multi-brand website concept that allows SOMMER to centrally maintain the websites of the individual brands. For one of the brands, SOMMER Antriebs- und Funktechnik, we also did a website relaunch with a modern, structured design. To speed up the creation of data sheets and catalogs, we were able to use our own development PimPrint. This allows the direct connection of the Pimcore PIM to InDesign. Finally, we were able to integrate a product configurator on the website based on the new data model, which leads to clear product recommendations in just a few clicks.

In the meantime, we have been accompanying SOMMER on the path to digitalization for almost three years. During this time, many of the company goals set at the beginning have been successfully implemented. Starting with the conversion of the data architecture to a single source of truth. With Pimcore, SOMMER has a future-proof platform that forms the basis for all further project successes. The new website concept simplifies the maintenance of individual brand websites enormously by allowing them to be managed centrally. At the same time, there is enough room for individual adjustments thanks to the modular structure. The manual effort for the creation of print data sheets and catalogs could be noticeably reduced thanks to our solution. The extensive automation of data extraction frees up resources that can be invested in strategic and creative work. Finally, the product configurator has already led to an improvement in the conversion rate.
