What is a product information management (PIM) system and how does it differ from master data management?

A PIM system makes product information ready for sale and distribution across channels: it centralizes content, attributes, variants, media references, and localizations, checks quality, and displays data consistently. MDM is broader in scope: it manages master data across multiple domains (e.g., products, suppliers, locations) with a focus on governance, standardization, and uniqueness.

How does a PIM differ from an ERP and when do I need both?

A PIM makes your product data ready for market: enriching, validating, translating, and publishing it in a channel-specific manner. An ERP controls operational processes and transactions such as purchasing, inventory, orders, and finance. In practice, both systems complement each other: ERP provides operational facts, PIM provides consistent product truth for all touchpoints.
