The project

SCHLEIFRING GmbH, with subsidiaries in the USA and China, is a leading global developer and manufacturer of rotary transmission systems for electrical power, signals and media, with a focus on sophisticated, customer-specific solutions. Before the introduction of the slip ring configurator, the complex products were exclusively manufactured individually and on customer request. The goal of SCHLEIFRING GmbH was to enable its customers to independently configure an individual product, based on a modular system. In close cooperation with the customer, all requirements and expectations were analyzed. Especially important: the system should be visually appealing and intuitive at the same time. The implementation took place in several iterations and in an agile process.

Solution

The configurator

Thus, a first MVP (Minimum Viable Product) was quickly created and tested on the market. SCHLEIFRING needed a flexible management interface to maintain the individual modules and components of a slip ring and to define rules and dependencies. Here, Pimcore was the obvious solution. The enterprise open source software offers all the necessary features for successful product data management, including a comprehensive eCommerce framework, significant performance enhancements, and greater convenience. The interfaces become more intuitive and offer new possibilities such as a customer account, an inquiry history, a shopping cart and a check-out process. A special challenge was the introduction of the individual product code for the fully configured slip rings. This codes the product, which consists of components and modules, in a unique key and forms the basis of the innovative modular system.

Results

The results

This coding was designed in close cooperation between SCHLEIFRING and Intera. With the help of the product code, each configuration can be clearly identified and restored at any time. Another advantage of Pimcore: editorial content of the configurator can be maintained in multiple languages to enable international customers to configure a slip ring as well. In addition, the configurator was implemented in a responsive manner and can thus be used for all end devices. The UI/UX of the configurator was produced in close cooperation with the customer, taking into account the company's CI/CD. For further expansion, the integration in Shopware, the realization of further configurators including 3D display and augmented reality for smartphones, as well as an SAP connection is already being implemented. Standard slip rings can already be individually configured at www.schleifringonline.de.
