Challenge

A simple content management system for a complex project

With the project Digitale Schiene Deutschland (Digital Rail Germany), Deutsche Bahn (DB) plans to digitize its rail network using the new European Train Control System (ETCS). The goal is to improve train traffic through efficient data exchange between trains, tracks, and the DB control center via radio. To promote their new endeavor, DB needed a modern, versatile content platform to match this ambitious project. Numerous editors of varying levels of knowledge and experience needed to be able to work with the website. The content management system’s user interface therefore had to be easy to use and self-explanatory, such that editors could publish engaging content with only minimal training necessary.

Solution

“What you see is what you get”

We wanted to create an easy-to-use, yet versatile CMS. Therefore, we developed a user interface for editors that closely resembles what visitors see on the website: a “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG) solution. Managing the site’s content was transformed into an intuitive, easy-to-understand process for editors of all experience levels. We achieved this by using the Pimcore framework. Although other CMS solutions offer various advantages, editors can find them cumbersome—particularly when a CMS user interface doesn't visually correspond with what’s shown on the website. One of Pimcore’s main objectives, however, is to enable the development of user-friendly software. This allowed us to easily apply the look we created for the website’s frontend to the user interface of the CMS.

A CMS editors love to use

We created a flexible, easy-to-use web platform with a user interface for editors that looks just like the actual website. Editors can now easily create engaging content to keep web visitors updated on Deutsche Bahn’s exciting new infrastructure project: the digitization of the DB rail network. The editors have all the flexibility of a CMS, combined with an overall system that can be navigated with minimal effort. They can add various types of media, rearrange content modules as needed, and easily add links and references, all with Pimcore’s native drag-and-drop feature. Training new editors is quick and efficient. In almost no time, users are able to start independently working with the system.
